Hull & Humber has a diverse economic base.

Hull & Humber has the largest ports complex in the UK and the city-region also has a strong manufacturing tradition.

Hull & Humber is also a major exporter of chemical products, and houses one of the fastest growing chemical bases within the UK, and one of the busiest in Europe.

In addition, Hull & Humber has a strong energy sector, providing 30% of the UK’s natural gas and 20% of the UK’s refined petroleum products.

The city region punches above its weight in the multi-billion pound Healthcare sector, being home to some of the leading names in healthcare such as Smith & Nephew, Reckitt Benckiser and Seven Seas, who operate world leading, multi-million pound operations from Hull.

On the South Bank of the Humber, Grimsby is known as “Europe’s food town” and is home to over 500 food and food-related businesses, accounting for a combined annual turnover of about £2.5 billion a year.

2004/05 was a record year for cargo handled at the ports of Hull and Goole with an annual increase approaching 10%. 16m tonnes of cargo were handled in 2005 and this is expected to increase in 2006. Hull is already UK’s largest timber port, handling over 1.8m cubic metres each year.
